Does Google’s Goggles offer an alternative approach to document and forms recognition?

Does Google’s Goggles offer an alternative approach to document and forms recognition?

It has been quite a while since there has been the introduction of a new recognition technology for business.  Google Goggles may provide the opportunity.  Take a look for yourself and give some considerations of how this application might be applied to a business application.

If you are not familiar with Goggles visit  http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#dc=gh0gg for a demonstration.  Goggles is currently available for the Android platform.  While scheduled for release on other platforms no dates have been set.

My introduction to Goggles was at a Starbucks.  My friend demonstrated the application by taking a picture of his Logitec Mouse with his cell phone.  Goggles immediately returned the Logitec website.  A picture snapped of the Starbucks logo in a window returned the Starbucks’ website.

Leveraging Google’s huge database and processing power Goggles muscles recognition of objects from a limited number of topics at the present time.  What is impressive is the speed and accuracy of the recognition of objects.  What is also impressive is the ability of the application to determine the object of interest.   That is, Googles removes background noise and focuses the search on a specific object.

For example, the demo at http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#dc=gh0gg shows a mobile phone taking a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.  Goggles recognizes the bridge and returns the appropriate links to the mobile phone.

This recognition technology works quickly and accurately on books, artwork, places, wine and logos.

My first reactions to my friends demonstration of Goggles was, can it be applied to business applications?  Specifically, could Goggles be adapted for forms and document recognition?  How is it different from the recognition methodologies currently employed?

Is Goggles a variation of the technology we employ today or is it a different approach to forms and document recognition?  What are the possibilities?  For example, would it be possible to use a database of all the forms processed from last year to perform accurate recognition of this year’s forms?

Current document recognition usually involves a programming effort of form setup and field definitions.  Is Goggles any different in its approach?  Does it offer any opportunities to reduce the amount of IT effort involved in document recognition?

It has been quite a while since the industry has seen the introduction of a major improvement in recognition technology.  If nothing else Google’s Goggles introduces the potential to broaden the application of recognition technology into a broader field of applications that we probably haven’t even begun to consider.

Share your ideas and comments by emailing me at mcnairs1@transactiondirectory.com.  I will include your responses in an future issue of Transaction News.
