Spending Growth Slowed for Third Consecutive Month as Consumers Remained Cautious
ATLANTA, July 12, 2010 – First Data Corporation, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing, today released its First Data SpendTrend™ analysis for the full month of June 2010 compared to June 2009. SpendTrend tracks same-store consumer spending via credit, signature debit, PIN debit and EBT cards at U.S. merchant locations.
Consumers remained cautious in June with dollar volume growth of 6.8% (6.7% excluding Gasoline Stations) compared to May’s growth of 9.2% (8.2% excluding Gasoline Stations). June’s transaction growth was 7.3% (7.2% excluding Gasoline Stations), a decline from May’s growth of 8.4% (8.1% excluding Gasoline Stations). Overall growth slowed for the third consecutive month as lower consumer spending growth may reflect persistent high unemployment, an increase in personal savings and the expiration of certain government stimulus and benefit programs.
Average tickets decreased -0.5% (unchanged excluding Gasoline Stations) in June after posting positive year-over-year growth for four consecutive months. The biggest drivers of lower average tickets were Food Services and Drinking Places (including Restaurants/QSR), Retailers and Services merchants.
In June, Retailers posted their lowest year-over-year dollar volume growth in 2010 of 5.2%, compared to May’s growth rate of 7.2%. General Merchandise Stores (including Value Retail) also posted their lowest year-over-year dollar volume growth of the year but fared better than Retailers with dollar volume growth of 6.2%, compared to May’s growth rate of 8.7%.
The Southern region was the worst performing region in the U.S. with dollar volume growth of 3.8%. This was the lowest year-over-year growth rate for the region since October 2009. Transaction growth was also impacted significantly with growth of 5.5% in June, the lowest growth rate since May 2009.
June Card Based Transactions CHANGE
Credit +0.1%
Signature Debit +11.4%
PIN Debit +10.4%
