Project submitted by A2iA and two university research laboratories will produce new knowledge and interaction between public and corporate laboratories.
NEW YORK / PARIS, FRANCE, July 12, 2010 – A2iA, the worldwide leading software developer of tools for handwritten and machine-printed text recognition, data extraction, and the intelligent classification of paper documents, announced today that a project submitted jointly with two of its partner-university laboratories (Laboratory of Information Science and Systems at the University of South Toulon-Var / Laboratory of Neuroscience Integrative and Adaptive University of Provence) was recently selected for funding by the ANR, The French National Research Agency (L'Agence nationale de la recherche) within the “Content and Interactions” category. The ANR supports the development of applied research of innovative technology, and promotes the collaboration between public and the private research centers. Only a small percentage of projects are selected each year, and are chosen after a competition and peer review.
The goal of the project, titled “COGNILEGO: Indexing Cognitive Integration of Manuscripts: Sense of Pixels - Comparative Studies and Consolidation of the State of the Art,” is to compare the cognitive approach of reading developed by the laboratories, with the statistical model developed by A2iA’s research and development department. After its completion, A2iA will be able to strengthen the performance of its recognition engines by combining these two models.
This scientific approach lies at the heart of A2iA’s developments, as the company has always relied on research and development to strengthen its technological lead. This core-value remains today, and A2iA operates one of the world’s largest private research centers dedicated to cursive handwriting recognition. The research conducted within the center, often in cooperation with university laboratories, is adapted to be a part of A2iA’s proprietary toolkits, which enables the organization to continuously improve the results of its software and meet the demands of the market.
